Embarking on the journey to become a coach was an exciting and transformative decision.
Almost 4 years ago, a chance encounter in an assessment center sparked the discovery of my coaching skills. Curiosity led me to further explore the world of professional coaching. Since then, I embarked on a learning adventure, attending various schools that shaped me into the coach I am today.
My first instinct was to search on Google "coaching schools", "coaching schools in Romania", "best coaching schools" - the list was endless. After a few days of exhaustive research, armed with a set of criteria that resonated with my aspirations, I finally decided to narrow down my choices to schools within my city, because I wanted to do the courses face to face. Guess what? Before taking the plunge I chose to seek the wisdom of those who had already treaded the path I was about to embark on.
Networking become an invaluable tool in my decision-making process. I reached out to individuals who had successfully graduated from coaching programs, eager to share their experiences with pros and cons.
One key lesson I learned early on was the importance of finding a coaching school that aligned with not just the accreditation and curriculum, but also with my personal values.
So, why is it so important to do your research before committing to a coaching school?
Tip 1 - Accreditation and Certification
Accreditation is a mark of credibility for coaching schools. Choose a program that is recognized and accredited by reputable coaching organisations like International Coaching Federation, European Mentoring and Coaching Council or others.
For me, it was much easier to apply for my ICF certification because the school was already accredited by ICF. More info here.
Tip 2 - Practical Experience
We all know that theory is important, but practical experience is invaluable. Opt for a coaching school that provides opportunities for coaching supervision, case studies etc. Practical exposure will help you develop the skills necessary for the coaching session.
Look for programs that cover a broad range of coaching techniques, ethics, and practical skills.
Tip 3 - Networking Opportunities
For me the coaching school was not just a place where to learn, was also a community where I built valuable connections with fellow students, mentors, peers etc. Look for schools that offer networking events, mentorship programs etc.
Tip 4 - Reviews and Testimonials
Before deciding, research the coaching school thoroughly. Read reviews and testimonials from current and past students to get a sense of their experiences. This insight can provide valuable information about the school's overall reputation.
Tip 5 - Costs
I am convinced that you will also consider the cost, and you will see that all the renowned coaching schools are not cheap. Don't let the cost to be the only deciding factor. Consider the value of the education you'll receive and explore any financial options available (there are a lot of schools where you can pay in installments).
From curiosity to Certification
Choosing your first coaching school is a key step toward a beautiful career journey. For me both schools, Coach Masters Academy from Singapore and EdAlt Institute from Romania provided me invaluable knowledge and tools that have been instrumental in my coaching journey.
Since 2022 I am a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
Coaching is not just a profession; it is a transformative journey.
